Canada boasts world class institutions and is cheaper than American universities. Getting admission into a Canadian university is relatively easier but getting in top three universities may be tough. The list of standardized test scores includes:


The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the most important exams to get admission in Canadian colleges. It measures the ability to communicate in English across all four language skills “listening, reading, writing and speaking” for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication.

You must apply to a test center to take TOEFL test prior to the test date. Top most universities in Canada requires >250 (iBT >90-100) score of TOEFL. Most of the Canadian universities require minimum score of 580 for TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test (237 for computer based TOEFL and 90 for internet based TOEFL).

Basically, there are two formats for the TOEFL test. The format you choose depends on the location of the test center. Most of the test takers take the TOEFL iBT test. All the other test centers that do not have internet access offer the Paper-based Test (PBT).


The international English language testing system (IELTS) is an internationally owned and recognized worldwide direct English language assessment of the highest quality and integrity readily available throughout the world. IELTS is most widely recognized and accepted English language test in Canada and 7.0 is the generally accepted score for IELTS in Canada. The minimum score accepted for a course ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, depending upon courses and institutes you are applying to.

All the candidates must complete four modules- Listening, Reading, Writing and speaking to obtain an IELTS Test Report Form. Candidates are tested in Listening, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules.

There is a choice between Academic and General Training in the Writing Modules. The first three modules should be completed in one day and the Speaking Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test center, in the period seven days before or after the other Modules.

3. GRE

The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is one of the most prestigious exams in the country. It is a standardized test for admission requirement for many graduate schools in US, Canada and many other countries.

It is a computer based test and has been developed to evaluate the verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study.

In Canada, GRE is required for master’s level admission, and some universities and programs may need a good score in the test too. This test helps universities or colleges to measure the ability of applicants for advanced education. Students who intend to study business don’t require appearing for GRE exam.

There is no such qualification for appearing for GRE exam. However, the candidate must be a graduate student or about to complete graduation within six coming months.

  • Some universities don’t require GRE scores for grad school admission.
  • Some Canadian universities require GRE scores, but don’t specify minimum scores
  • Some require GRE score and have minimum GRE Scores for admission.
